Briana

“This is my song!” Allison cried as she grooved to the fifth Common song she demanded we listen to. We’d been shopping all day for Whitney’s gift to me. Whit had gone on and on about wanting to redecorate my bedroom to give it “new life” as she put it.

Allison and I were in my car headed to HomeGoods for bedding and bathroom stuff. As always, she was getting on my nerves.

I snatched her phone at the light and disconnected it from my car.

“I wish Ma could see how you act sometimes. Our whole life you’ve been a goody two-shoes when she’s around, then as soon as it’s just me and you, you’re snatching my phone and taking away my happiness. I just don’t… I just don’t think I can be around you anymore. Let me out. I’ll figure out a way to get home.” Her voice rose and fell in dramatic overtures, infused with the cracks and wavering of fake sobs. She threw her phone in her bag and turned toward the window, bringing her hand to her mouth to muffle her pretend cry.

Side-eyeing her, I asked, “What the hell is wrong with you?”

She laughed right away, like she had tickled herself, then tried to reconnect her phone to my car. “I gotta do my part to lift your spirits. You’re not doing great right now.”

“Well thanks for being brutally honest.”

“It’s a gift,” she shrugged, then tried to connect her phone to the car again.

“Uh-uh! I am not listening to anymore Common.” I connected my phone and scrolled through the songs. I want to hear—” My phone rang in my hand, and I answered it without looking. The Bluetooth picked it up. “This is Briana.” I always answered like that in case it was a new client.

“What’s up, Bri. What you got planned for the day?”

Shit— I moved to hang up, but Allison slapped my hand away. She almost turned her whole body around in her seat to look at me “Um, hey Ike. My sister’s in the car and you’re on speaker.”

I’d strategically kept her from finding out about him because Allison could never let shit be. When I didn’t look at her, she nodded at nothing in particular and waited her turn to talk to Ike.

“What y’all up to?” he asked, not aware of the trouble I was now in.

“Headed to the store. Call you later, ok?” I rushed, hoping he’d get the point. He didn’t.

“Oh alright. I’m tryna go to Union Market for that bougie soda you turned me on to, so hit me up when y’all are done.” I pursed my lips as more evidence of our relationship came out.

“Mmkay, call you when I get home. Bye.”

“Wait,” he cut in. “I need to get Paul’s book back from you. He’s been hounding me.”

“Damn, I sure did forget two groups in a row. You can come by later if I don’t get in too late.”

“Really, Bri? Y’all getting bougie soda and he knows where you live?
